3 Easy Steps: Cleaning Your Toothbrush

steps123primaryAre you completely satisfied with how your oral health is doing because you are consistent with your brushing habits? Do you feel somewhat strange about the fact that with all of your dental hygiene knowledge, you don’t have the first clue about maintaining your toothbrush? Don’t worry – unless anyone has ever specifically instructed you in this area, you’ve been left to make your best guess (and you’ve probably been doing a pretty great job). To remove the guesswork, we offer a few simple steps.

Step #1: Rinse It

First, you need to rinse your toothbrush after you use it. You don’t need to find a way to thoroughly sterilize it, you don’t need to dip it in mouthwash or alcohol, nor do you need to place it in scalding hot water. Fortunately, protecting your oral health by keeping your brush clean only requires the following:

  • Hold your toothbrush head under running water
  • Rinse until the bristles are clean
  • Rinse the rest of the brush if necessary

Step #2: Let It Dry

Now, this step is something that may trip some patients up a bit. While the idea of placing your brush in a sealed container seems protective, it’s actually not okay unless the brush is completely dry. Bacteria proliferate in wet areas, so it’s best to let your brush air-dry. Simple!

Step #3: Replace It

Again, to protect your oral health you need to take very simple action: Replace your toothbrush with a new brush every three to four months or so to ensure it’s offering the cleaning power you need.
