Cosmetic Dental Materials

zircAre you considering seeing a cosmetic dentist? Maybe you chipped a tooth, have a missing tooth, or your teeth have become worn over the years. Cosmetic dentists can help restore the beauty and function of your smile. If you are considering a visit to a cosmetic dentist you may hear the following cosmetic dental materials mentioned: porcelain, leucite, zirconium, and lithium disilicate. Different materials are recommended for different areas of the mouth based on esthetics and strength. Do you know your cosmetic dental materials? Although your dentist will review and recommend the appropriate material for your procedure, it’s good to have some background ahead of time. Material Choices

When considering a cosmetic dental procedure there are two major requirements when deciding upon the treatment material: Strength and esthetics. The material color, translucency, and opalescence should blend naturally with your teeth, and the material should be strong enough to withstand normal chewing forces.  The following are common cosmetic dental materials:

Zirconium: Zirconium can withstand the biting forces of front and back teeth, and blend naturally with the surrounding dentition.

Porcelain: Porcelain is the conventional material used for crowns and veneers, however porcelain is known to chip and break. To combat this issue porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are often used, particularly for back teeth. The metal can withstand chewing, biting, and grinding forces, while the porcelain lends esthetics.

Glass Leucite: Glass leucite is a mixture of glass and ceramic. The glass contributes to the esthetics of the material by providing the translucency of natural teeth. The leucite provides strength and durability. Glass leucite is often the material of choice for crowns and bridges.

Lithium Disilicate: Lithium disilicate is among the most esthetic in dental restorative materials. It blends seamlessly with the patient’s natural tooth color and is strong enough to withstand normal bite forces.
