Magnolia Flavored Toothpaste and Chewing Gum?

Bad Breath GirlOne cause of halitosis (bad breath) is bacteria in the mouth. Having a strong odor to your breath can be an embarrassing and chronic problem. Gum, mints, mouthwash, and even brushing your teeth can only go so far in covering up the offensive odors emanating from your oral cavity. Research is underway at regular intervals to uncover new (and sometimes unusual) ways to fight bad breath. One such study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Scientists found an unusual source for a potent bad breath fighting extract: the bark from magnolia trees.

Unusual Breath Freshener

Nine volunteers of adult age submitted to breath tests given sixty minutes after eating. All of the participants were next given a piece of chewing gum or a breath mint. Some of these breath fresheners contained magnolia bark extract. Thirty minutes after consuming the mints or gum, another breath test was given. Those who had ingested magnolia bark extract had a significant reduction in the bad breath causing bacteria in their mouths. Overall, the compound from the magnolia bark was tested on two types of bacteria that cause bad breath, and one type that causes cavities. All three types of bacteria were obliterated by the extract.

Future Magnolia Infusions in Dental Products

There are not currently any bad breath fighting products on the market that contain magnolia bark compounds. The extracts which were used in this particular study – magnolol and honokiol – were procured from companies in China and Japan. Attempting a homemade breath fighter utilizing an actual magnolia tree would not be recommended at this time. However, as with any exciting research, hopefully, this information will be put to use in future oral hygiene products, chewing gum, and breath mints. For now, visiting your dentist every six months is one potential solution if you are dealing with persistent halitosis.
