Old, New, Shared: Your Dental Hygiene Questions

womanquestionhandAre you someone who focuses as much as possible on sustainability and making best choices for your life – but you find that you often come up against uncertainties? For instance, is it better to rinse your floss and use it again – or is it better for your oral health to trash the used floss and begin again each time with new floss? When you’re wondering about your options regarding dental hygiene and what you should do, we encourage you to become a bit more familiar with the products at hand, so you no longer worry that you could be doing yourself a disservice.

Should I Reuse Floss?

First of all, if you’re wondering if you should reuse your dental floss, we appreciate your attempt at practicing “green” dental hygiene. While turning off the water when you brush your teeth is a good decision, reusing your floss is not. You’re breaking down the floss a bit when you use it and it’s becoming coated with bacteria. Though rinsing it will wash away some bacteria, it’s difficult to get the floss back to its original sterile state. Trash it and start fresh each time to best protect your oral health.

Should I Share A Toothbrush?

When you imagine how many toothbrushes are lying around in landfills, you might find yourself wincing at the thought of using and disposing of approximately four toothbrushes every year. As a result, you may think that sharing this dental hygiene instrument with your spouse or trying to sterilize your bristles is a good plan. Unfortunately, this is one time when you simply need to use a new brush once every three or four months. Don’t share – you’re swapping bacteria and additional germs. (You might want to consider a biodegradable toothbrush if you can locate one you like).
