Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that insert directly into your gums and jawbone, delivering a stable base for your prosthetic teeth.

Because they hold your teeth firmly in place, dental implants restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile like you did before losing your teeth.

Your mouth naturally secures them in place during the healing process, so dental implants become a permanent addition to your smile.

Which dental implant benefits should I consider?

There are many dental implant benefits to consider when discussing this option with the A New Smile team, such as:

Unlike non-implant-supported prosthetics, dental implants keep your teeth firmly in place, so they look identical to your natural teeth. This gives you the confidence to smile without worrying about your prosthetic slipping when you chew or speak.

Oral health

Dental implants don’t decay from cavities, leaving your mouth as healthy as possible.

Easier chewing

Conventional prosthetics tend to slip in your mouth when you chew, making it difficult to eat your favorite foods. Dental implants eliminate this problem by holding your teeth in place at all times.

Clearer speech

Poor-fitting prosthetics lead to a slew of speech problems, including mumbling, lisps, and even clicking when you speak. With dental implants, your prosthetic always fits perfectly and sits comfortably in your mouth, which improves your speech overall.

While dentures, dental crowns, and dental bridges must be replaced over time, dental implants are permanent. With proper care, they can last for decades, even a lifetime in some cases.

Dental implants restore your smile in a way that alternative tooth replacements cannot. They are not removable, so you care for them just as you would your own natural teeth.

What happens during the dental implant process?

Once you decide that dental implants are right for you, the A New Smile team takes digital X-rays, scans, and impressions of your mouth to map out your individualized treatment plan.

The amount of time this takes depends on your unique needs. If you have a failed dental bridge or severely decayed, damaged, or broken teeth, they must be removed before the procedure.

Likewise, the team must make sure you have enough jawbone to support the implants. If you don’t, they recommend a bone graft surgery prior to the procedure to create the support you need.

At your first dental implant appointment, the team inserts the titanium post directly into your gums and screws it down into the jawbone. Your mouth then heals over the next six to 12 weeks, naturally securing the implant in place.

After your mouth has fully healed, the team takes impressions of your mouth to create your tooth replacement restoration in a dental lab — a dental crown or denture. The team connects your new tooth to the implant at your next appointment.

Dental implants look, feel, and function so much like your natural teeth that you won’t be able to tell the difference. Call A New Smile or schedule an appointment online to learn more.
