Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why are my teeth yellow?

As you age, it’s easy for your teeth to darken and accumulate stains. Some of the most common reasons for dark tooth stains include:

Age

As you age, your tooth enamel naturally wears down and reveals the dark yellow dentin underneath.

Certain foods and drinks

Red wine, coffee, black tea, dark berries, along with other foods and drinks can stain your teeth over time.

Tobacco

Not only does smoking and chewing tobacco leave behind tooth stains, but they also lead to gum disease.

Poor oral hygiene

Inadequate brushing and flossing cause plaque and bacteria buildup on your teeth, which leads to tooth discoloration.

Certain medications

High blood pressure medication, certain cancer treatments, antihistamines, and antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline all have tooth-staining properties.

Genetics

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to avoid it, you may have genetically thin enamel that discolors easily.

What are my teeth whitening options?

While there are many over-the-counter (OTC) teeth whitening options, such as whitening strips, toothpaste, and mouthwash, none are as effective as professional treatments. Fortunately, at A New Smile, the dental team offers plenty of options to fit any lifestyle.

Zoom® Teeth Whitening

Zoom in-office teeth whitening brightens your smile by up to eight shades in a single visit. During your appointment, the team applies the whitening solution to your teeth and activates it with a special laser light for approximately 15 minutes.

They then repeat the process to ensure your teeth are as white as possible. A New Smile also offers custom-made at-home teeth whitening trays, so you can combat tooth discoloration on your own time.

KöR® Whitening

A New Smile recommends KöR whitening to patients with sensitive teeth. Because the whitening solution is made with desensitizing agents, it’s believed to be gentler than alternative whitening solutions.

The team at A New Smile offers both in-office whitening options and take-home trays to suit your busy schedule.

How does teeth whitening work?

There are two main types of teeth whitening that A New Smile recommends:

In-office teeth whitening

If you choose an in-office treatment, the team covers your teeth in a special whitening solution and activates it with a laser light. This breaks up dark, yellow pigments to reveal the white teeth underneath. For patients with little time to spare, an in-office treatment is ideal as it’s quick and highly effective.

At-home teeth whitening trays

Many patients prefer to whiten their teeth on their own time. In that case, A New Smile recommends custom-made teeth trays. If you choose this option, the team must first take impressions of your teeth to design your custom trays. These trays can then be worn at any time to brighten your smile.

You have plenty of options if you want a whiter, healthier smile. Call A New Smile or book an appointment online to learn more.
