Nitrous Oxide Sedation

There’s a good chance that you’ve heard nitrous oxide referred to as something else: laughing gas. It earned the nickname due to the euphoric effect it has, and it’s extremely effective at alleviating mild to moderate anxiety. So, if you are struggling with nerves, stress, and worry surrounding your next visit, don’t hesitate to ask us about this calming solution! You can also read on to learn more, including how it works.

Who is a Good Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?

Dental nitrous oxide in Pacoima is a great option for patients who:

  • Have a fear of needles
  • Struggle with dental anxiety
  • Experience had/neck/jaw pain in the treatment chair
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Need extensive dental care, like multiple tooth extractions

Of course, there are also some cases when nitrous oxide isn’t ideal, including if you have asthma. That’s why it’s so important to schedule a consultation with us! Once we have an in-depth understanding of your dental and medical history, including any allergies you have, we can determine if you’re a good candidate for this form of sedation dentistry.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

A small mask will be fitted over your nose so that you can breathe in nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen. After a few minutes, you’ll feel a calming wave wash over you. You won’t be unconscious; you’ll be aware of what’s going on around you, and you’ll be able to respond to our requests. You’ll also be completely at ease with what’s happening throughout the entire procedure. Plus, we can adjust the level of sedation at any time if we need to.

Aftercare for Nitrous Oxide

Once the nasal mask is removed, it only takes a few minutes for the effects of nitrous oxide to wear off. As a result, you don’t need to arrange for someone to drive you home or to take the rest of the day off work. Instead, you can resume your day-to-day routine!

Important reminder: You still need to follow any aftercare instructions pertaining to the preventive, cosmetic, or emergency dentistry you received, like rinsing with warm salt water periodically or sticking to a soft foods diet for the next 24 hours.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Will I remember anything with dental sedation?

Even though you’ll technically be awake during your treatment, the effects of nitrous oxide will likely make your memories a bit hazy. You may recall general feelings or fragments of your experience, for example. Since nitrous oxide will dull your senses, however, you probably won’t remember details like sights, sounds, or smells.

Reading about what you may and may not remember after treatment with nitrous oxide probably doesn’t make much sense. Rest assured that ultimately, this sedative helps many patients have a more positive dental experience!

What does it feel like to be sedated at the dentist?

Since nitrous oxide is a mild sedative, you’re less likely to feel “heavy” and sluggish. Instead, you’ll feel more relaxed, “light” or “floaty,” and possibly even a bit euphoric. Many patients become more giggly while inhaling nitrous oxide – which is why it’s commonly called “laughing gas.”

Physically, your senses will be dulled, to the point where you’ll barely even notice the lights, sounds, and pressure in your mouth as your dentist takes care of your smile.

What are the risks of sedation dentistry?

Make no mistake, sedation dentistry is considered to be very safe. Nitrous oxide in particular is known for having few and incredibly uncommon side effects. That said, it’s not for everyone. It’s important to talk with your dentist about your health history before undergoing sedation for the first time, especially if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have sleep apnea
  • Have a respiratory illness
  • Take medication for your physical or mental health
  • Have recently had surgery

How long does dental sedation last?

The effects of nitrous oxide fade just as quickly as they take hold. Most patients are back to feeling normal just after five minutes! You’ll likely be able to drive yourself home (though we’ll monitor your condition, just in case) and continue about your day without any lingering drowsiness.

That said, you should still keep an eye on your oral health, especially if you visited for emergency dental treatment. Many procedures will cause mild discomfort while your mouth heals, but severe or prolonged pain that lasts for more than a week could mean you’re experiencing complications. Let us know right away if you experience this or any other abnormalities!

Can dental sedation make you sick?

The risk is slightly higher for more powerful sedatives, but nitrous oxide rarely causes nausea, even in children. If you have a sensitive stomach or are prone to nausea, please don’t hesitate to let us know! We may be able to prescribe medication to help prevent you from feeling sick after your treatment.
