Replacing Lost Teeth with Lifelike Implants
A wide, brilliant smile is your calling card, and a powerful way to attract and interact with others, both socially and professionally. Teeth can be lost as a result of poor oral hygiene, injury, or some other conditions. To restore these missing teeth, dental implants are the ultimate solution, as they look and function exactly like natural teeth. Designed to provide a strong and lifelike replacement for a lost tooth, our Santa Clarita dental implants can restore a whole and healthy smile.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
The first step in the implant procedure is to place a biocompatible (compatible with gum tissue) post created from titanium — a strong, light metallic material. The post is surgically inserted into the jaw. Over the healing stage, the process of “osseointegration,” (the post is sturdily integrated into your natural jawbone structure without motion) takes place. The jawbone becomes fused to the titanium post, similar to the natural root. Next, a lifelike restoration will be fabricated from a specialized ceramic material, and permanently attached to the post, completing the new tooth.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
When compared to other tooth replacement options, such as dental bridges or traditional dentures, our Eagle Rock dental implants offer a number of benefits, including:
- The ability to eat the same healthy food as prior to tooth loss
- Implants are secure and can last 25 years and more
- Implants stimulate jawbone growth, preventing facial collapse
- A natural looking appearance
- Multiple implants can be placed to secure a prosthetic, such as full or partial dentures
We will examine you to see if dental implants are the best option for replacing your lost teeth. Viable candidates should be free of periodontal disease and have enough jawbone tissue to support the new tooth. We offer other dental options for patients who are not good candidates for our Eagle Rock & Santa Clarita dental implants. Our goal is to create the full, brilliant smile you want.
The Long Term Solution: Dental Implants
Dental implants give you a permanent replacement tooth (or teeth) that function exactly like a natural tooth. There are no restrictions on what you can eat, and the implanted tooth will typically last for 25 years or longer. Implants are far more comfortable than dentures, and have the added advantage of keeping the jawbone from shrinking after losing a tooth. Implants are also a good value for the money spent. Once in place, the new tooth will often last a lifetime, with no need for further dental work. The tooth will not decay like a natural tooth.
Types of Dental Implants
Depending on what the patient needs, the treatment plan and type of implant can vary:
Single Tooth Implant
Some people have lost one tooth, whether through a dental problem, or an accident. These are new “stand-alone” implants, and the process does not involve treating the adjoining teeth. The implant is placed into the gap, leaving you with a strong, stable, natural looking tooth.
Implant Supported Bridges and Dentures
Another type of implant procedure is appropriate for those who are missing several teeth. The implant supports the bridge, and replaces some of the roots of the lost teeth. In a traditional bridge, the new teeth are attached to the adjoining teeth. In an implant supported bridge or dentures, the posts are implanted in the jaw, and the denture or bridge locked into place on the new structure.
Multiple Tooth Replacement Implants
If several teeth are missing, a fixed bridge can be supported by two different implants. If all or most of the teeth are missing or removed, implants can be used to anchor the dentures in place.
Should I Get A Dental Implant?
You may be a good candidate for our Eagle Rock and Santa Clarita dental implant if you have lost a tooth and want to create a natural looking, permanent tooth to replace it. The criteria to determine whether an implant will work for you includes:
- The location of the missing tooth
- The health and quantity of the jawbone beneath the area
- Your general health
The first step is an appointment in which our dentist can evaluate your unique situation, and determine the best method by which your tooth can be replaced. Generally, an implant has significant advantages over other tooth replacement treatments. It is a permanent solution, and in most cases, will not require any further treatment, with a strong replacement tooth that lasts for decades, or longer. They are extremely stable, and feel and appear just like your own natural tooth.
The Implant Procedure: How It Works
Initially, your dentist will consult with you and carefully review X-rays and CT scans. If more bone is needed to perform the implant, in some cases the area may need to be built up with a special oral surgery using synthetic bone to create a solid base, or what is called an onlay bone graft. In these cases, the entire process will take a bit of time, as the area must be fully healed prior to placing the implant post. In cases in which the patient has sufficient bone in the haw, the damaged tooth can be extracted and the titanium post placed in the same appointment.
After placing the post, a special “cap” is placed over the implanted post so that the healing process can begin. It can vary, patient to patient, and will require a few months for the titanium post to be fully integrated and stable in the jawbone. The next step involves placing the section of the implant that will hold the new tooth. An impression is taken and the new tooth created to perfectly match and fit your existing teeth. It is then cemented on, or in some cases secured with a screw. Your implant procedure is now complete, with a stable, natural-looking tooth that will function normally.
Dental implant surgery is typically performed with local anesthetic, and the patient is comfortable and free from pain throughout the entire process. Any pain associated with placing the post is similar to what could be expected with a tooth extraction, and easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
