Staying calm is important in an emergency, but sometimes that is easier said than done. You may be dealing with a crying child, or a loved one who has been up all night with an aching tooth. You may dealing with your very first instance of a dental emergency,, whether it is a chipped tooth or a crown that has suddenly gone missing. While you may be experiencing a jolt of adrenaline, and increased heart rate, keep calm and take a moment to think, rather than simply react.
Take A Deep Breath
If everyone hits the panic button, no one will be well served. Take a moment to take a breath, and compose yourself. Others (especially children, or anyone who is in pain or worried) will pick up on your moods. Breathing deeply gets oxygen to your brain, and helps trigger the parasympathetic (calming) parts of the nervous system. This helps counteract the “fight or flight” response that may already be activated.
Assess the Situation
Not every instance of dental pain is a true emergency. If there is significant blood or injury, you may need to dial 911. In other cases, a deep breath may help you realize that loud cries or the presence of a small amount of blood has led to a fear-based response. Many dental emergencies do not require an ambulance. There may even be some instances (like a tender spot, or minor bleeding at the gums) where we may advise you to watch for a day or two, and report back with signs of healing, or with evidence of further changes.
